Samsung to pay millions   The South Korean electronics manufacturer has agreed to pay Apple US$ 548 million, ordered by court due to a five-year-long patent dispute between the smartphone companies. Samsung faces more court trouble as some execs are investigated for possible insider trading. ▪
Acquisitions and cancellations     Indian e-commerce company Paytm strengthens its presence in online-to-offline by buying online marketplace +++ International seafood producer Thai Union dismissed its proposed US$ 1.5 billion acquisition of US rival Bumble Bee Seafoods, following antitrust objections. ▪
French and Chinese ambitions   While Carrefour’s expansion into Asia has been furthered by the construction of a new logistical hub in Tianjin, Chinese online giant Alibaba has appointed new heads for its German and French operations. ▪
Big plans at Kmart  The discount store company, owned by Wesfarmers, wants to double its size in the next years and drive revenue to AU$ 10 billion. Kmart-boss Guy Russo has his eyes on at least 50 stores of struggling rival Big W. ▪
Metro on the lookout   The German retail group is working to find suitable small- and medium-sized takeover targets, according to Chief Executive Olaf Koch. Europe's fourth-biggest retailer has about EUR 2 billion in cash and other readily available funds. ▪
Protecting the environment   Spanish retailer Mercadona has invested EUR 3.9 million into a new store in Madrid, which is designed to be eco-efficient. Over in France, competitor Carrefour has launched a private label product line to combat food waste. ▪

Meanwhile, German discount giant Aldi has run the most effective festive campaign so far, with its agile approach and social media engagement. ▪

Improving technology    Pittsburgh-based grocery chain Giant Eagle is overhauling its IT infrastructure with a hybrid cloud solution from IBM Cloud and sports retailer Decathlon has partnered with Checkpoint Systems to extend RFID technology across its more than 400 stores. ▪
Reshuffles and comeback attempts   Groupon, the e-commerce company that is famous for “daily deals”, is shuffling key leadership posts as it restructures operations under its new chief executive. Meanwhile, American Apparel founder Dov Charney explores plans with investors to revive the company, which filed for bankruptcy in October. ▪
Avon in deal talks  The 130-year old beauty product seller is set to sell its North American business to Cerberus Capital, a private equity firm, which is best known for its investments in troubled companies, as well as its willingness to dive into waters few others will. ▪

Walmart sues over tax hike   The Puerto Rico unit of the US retail giant has filed a lawsuit against the island’s government, seeking to overturn a new tax the retailer calls unfairly high. Walmart is the country's biggest private employer. ▪
Steinhoff under scrutiny   Ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the German subsidiary of the South African furniture retailer has been targeted for a tax investigation. As a result, Steinhoff’s share price is more than 6% down. ▪
Boost for Food Lover's   The South Africa-based fresh produce retailer has received a major investment from emerging private equity firm Actis, which bought a substantial minority stake in the business and is backing the founders. ▪
