US & Canada


Health deal ▪ Johnson & Johnson plans to buy children’s cough-syrup maker Zarbee’s Naturals, a leader in naturally-based healthcare products. The move could help the consumer goods giant to better reach health-conscious millennial parents. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.



Joining forces ▪ Manulife, Canada’s biggest insurance company, will partner with a drugstore chain owned by grocer Loblaw to provide advice to patients whose medical marijuana use it covers. Canadian law allows patients to pay for medical cannabis with money from healthcare spending accounts



Rises and falls ▪ Consumer good major Procter & Gamble's quarterly earnings topped analysts' expectations but fell short on sales. Tech giant Apple posted USD 9.55 billion in software and services revenue for Q3, a jump of 31% from one year ago. Food producer Fresh Del Monte registered a drop in gross profit in Q2 despite an increase in net sales.

Heatwave effects ▪ Soaring temperatures fuelled sales of barbeque meat at British grocer Waitrose, while the weather had an adverse effect on department store company John Lewis. In the Netherlands, supermarket operator Albert Heijn also suffered some damage as refrigeration failed in several stores last week.



Rescue talk ▪ Britain's House of Fraser is reportedly in discussions with retail tycoon Mike Ashley about a new investment deal to save the struggling department store chain. In June, the company announced plans to close 31 of its 59 stores, putting 6,000 jobs at risk.



Sustainability efforts ▪ French retailer Carrefour and electrical goods manufacturer LG have announced an environment awareness campaign in Spain. Over in Britain, Waitrose will be the first major supermarket to sell its own-label home compostable coffee pods, starting in December.




Asia & Australia


Booming business ▪ Chinese e-commerce major Suning announced that its operating income in the first half of the year increased by 32% to USD 16.3 billion, caused by a sale of its Alibaba shares. Beijing-based Baidu posted a 24.4% rise in quarterly revenue, driven by gains in the internet search firm's online ad business.



Going overseas ▪ In collaboration with franchisor Ataraxia Capital Partners, Australian food service restaurant Oporto will open its first restaurant in Sri Lanka this year. Another store will be launched in Shangri-La in early 2019. Oporto has been serving consumers in Australia for over 30 years.



Free bags ▪ Australian supermarket major Coles has hoisted a white flag in the face of angry shoppers aggrieved by having to bring their own bags or pay for a "reusable" one and has promised to give plastic bags away for free indefinitely. The move leaves Greenpeace outraged.
