Aldi under scrutiny   The corporate regulator is expected to grill Aldi over its failure to consistently notify customers of fees for using credit cards and 'tap and go' cards, six months after the discount supermarket promised it had done so. ▪
Changes at the top in New Zealand    Woolworths Australia has named Steve Donohue as MD of its Progressive Enterprise Unit, based in Auckland +++ Fonterra has appointed Jacqueline Chow to the newly created role of COO Velocity. Johan Priem, president Greater China, will take on the additional role of MD Asia Middle East and Africa. ▪
Hershey sales drop in China   The Pennsylvania-based candy company has been hit by slowing sales in Asia’s largest economy. Sales fell 47% in its first quarter from the same period a year ago. ▪
Snapdeal invests big time  The Indian e-commerce company is aiming to make up to 10 more investments, to take on Flipkart and Amazon in India's US$ 3 billion e-commerce industry. The company has earmarked 60% of its budget for technology and acquisitions. ▪
Zalando hires staff in Ireland   The German-based online fashion platform has opened a research and development centre in Dublin, which will see 200 jobs created over the next three years. The tech hub is the retailer’s first one outside of Germany (paywall). ▪
More supermarkets cut jobs   Sainsbury ’s has become the latest of the big four to announce a radical store shake-up that will lead to the loss of 800 jobs. The company aims to save GBP 500 million over the next three years +++ Northern UK supermarket chain Booths is to axe 100 jobs as part of a plan to close two stores and restructure in-store management. ▪
United Biscuits launches Ambassador Club   The British multinational food manufacturer has announced its latest commitment to the convenience and impulse category through the launch of its exclusive retailer Ambassadors Club. ▪
USA & Canada
Focus on store expansion    Ahold USA plans to launch an urban fresh format in Boston +++ German discounter Aldi has opened its first two stores in Richmond, Virginia, yesterday and has another six sites in the area coming +++ Dunkin’ Brands Group started this year strong and plans to add up to 750 new units in 2015 . ▪
Walmart ties bonus to sales growth   Unimpressive results at Walmart are taking a toll on the pay for its top executives. The company revealed in its proxy statement that executive cash bonuses are now being tied to sales performance. However, global responsibility and sustainability continue to be priorities. ▪
More results revealed   While Amazon tops forecasts with a 15% sales jump, Procter & Gamble took a hit from the strong dollar. Google’s first-quarter earnings rose 4% and Ebay reported stronger-than-expected first quarter earnings, thanks to its growing payments business PayPal.  ▪

Future world in France   The new innovation centre of IT & management consultancy Accenture has just opened in Sophia Antipolis in South France. Research topics are futuristic such as talking robots, driverless cars and delivery drones. The German Retail Blog reports. ▪
The Apple watch and the grocery app   Today is the official start. The Apple Watch store launches with 3,000 apps. The world’s first Apple Watch grocery shopping app has been introduced by online supermarket Ocado, enabling customers to do their grocery shopping from their wrists in 15 seconds. ▪
