IFA wants more Indian companies Messe Berlin is looking to increase participation from India for the annual tech show Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA). The event showcases consumer electronics and home appliances. ▪

Lidl slips in Britain and cooperates in Spain The slow store opening programme of the German discounter has caused its share of the lucrative UK discounters market to slip, despite its success in food and grocery. Over in Spain, Lidl has teamed up with Media Markt on a promotional campaign. ▪

Coop concentrates on convenience The Co-operative Group has announced more store closures, selling six stores and closing another. The group is focussing on convenience. It had sold 37 larger stores last year, leaving it with 717 supermarkets and 2.079 c-stores. ▪

Domino's enters Georgia The US food-service chain has opened the first Domino's store in the Republic of Georgia. With seven new markets opening in the past 12 months (including Azerbaijan and Cambodia earlier in 2015), Domino's is among the fastest growing American food service chains. ▪

Management decisions Walmart is shuffling a number of key executives and also tinkering with its organisational structure +++ Fresh Market is expanding its board of directors +++ Schnuck Markets eliminated 52 positions at its headquarters. The layoffs spanned different departments and position levels. ▪

Kroger buys Hiller's stores The grocery store chain will acquire all seven of the Hiller’s Markets stores in the Detroit metropolitan area. The purchase is part of Kroger's plan to invest US$ 150 million to expand. ▪

Jet.com challenges Amazon E-commerce site Jet.com prepares to take off and hopes to compete with Amazon.com. It might help that Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba recently invested secretly in the challenger. ▪

More results revealed Sales at Weis Markets were up, but net income declined in the first quarter +++ Same-store sales increased 3% in April 2015 for pharmacy chain Rite Aid, compared to the same month a year earlier +++ Net income of Publix Super Markets jumped 11% in the first quarter of fiscal 2015. ▪

Pepkor expands in Nigeria The South African clothing retailer, bought by Steinhoff International Holdings last year, plans to double its presence in Nigeria with 10 store openings a year. The company opened its first outlet in Africa’s most populous country (paywall) in 2012 and will have 31 stores by July. ▪

Amex launches Plenti Today, American Express will roll out its new loyalty programme, Plenti, allowing US shoppers for the first time to earn rewards points through a variety of purchases, from paying a phone bill to filling up at the pump. ▪
