Europe


Entering France ▪ British variety retailer B&M has entered another market after acquiring Babou, a discounter which operates 95 stores in France. The seller of the business is a private family-owned investment company. Babou generated revenues of EUR 347.1 million last year.



Sales discussions ▪ In its ongoing efforts to reduce debts, French retailer Rallye, the owner of grocery chain Casino, is in talks with a private equity firm to sell its 'Courir' sports arm. Across the channel, a formal sales process is shaping up for toy retailer Hamley's, while UK clothing company French Connection negotiates with four bidders.



Shopping experience ▪ German retail giant Metro Real has opened a second Markthalle outlet in Braunschweig. The concept combines gastronomic elements, gourmet sections and a large fresh assortment. High Street struggle ▪ Debenhams could close more than a third of its 166 stores as the beleaguered department store operator looks to save millions. Some relief may come from the UK government. Chancellor Philip Hammond is reportedly considering a GBP 300 million lifeline for ailing high street retailers.




United States


Health care tie-ups ▪ Drugstore chain Walgreens and Michigan-based McLaren Health Care have agreed to collaborate, which will see the latter surrender all 14 of its existing pharmacies to Walgreens. The announcement follows the retailer's decision to expand its partnership with testing company Labcorp.



Challenging outlook ▪ Kimberly-Clark is switching chief executives (paywall) and announced that Thomas Falk would step down and be succeeded by chief operating officer Michael Hsu next year. The maker of Kleenex tissues struggles with weak sales but reported better-than-expected quarterly results.



Toy worries ▪ It's been more than a year since Toys'R'Us filed for bankruptcy, and Hasbro is still struggling with the fallout as it relied heavily on the retail chain for sales. Shares of the American toy maker were down after its earnings missed the estimates for quarterly revenue.




Asia


Online reach ▪ JD.com will launch its first online flagship store on Google’s shopping platforms by the end of this year, allowing it to sell directly to American consumers. The Chinese e-commerce giant has also announced that it is entering the parcel delivery service in its home country.



Japanese offers ▪ Nestlé has opened a made-to-order Kit Kat store in Osaka, where personalised chocolate bars are created as a video clip shows. In collaboration with Softbank and Yahoo, Alibaba-backed Paytm has launched a digital wallet in Japan called Pay Pay. It is a QR-based smartphone app.

Lidl's scholarship ▪ The discounter is set to support the German language in Oxford and announced plans to fund one graduate who enrols on a master's degree in Modern German and sponsor competitions with cash prizes of up to GBP 500 for undergraduates from next year.



Growing up healthy ▪ Nestlé wants children to understand the importance of eating healthy to achieve their ambitions. The Swiss food giant has teamed up with Worldchefs, a global network of chefs, to celebrate International Chef's Day with a number of fun-fuelled workshops for kids.
