Inclusive practice ▪ A Sainsbury’s store has changed its signage to ‘Signbury’s’ as part of an initiative to promote and encourage the use of sign language among staff and customers. Over 100 employees at the grocery chain took signing lessons to be able to communicate basic greetings and phrases to customers.



Positive partnership ▪ Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have signed a deal with German payments company Wirecard to process all of the card payments made at stores across Germany. The discount giants have hinted at ‘expanding the cooperation’ in future.



Green thinking ▪ British food delivery company Deliveroo is teaming up with an eco-friendly start-up to explore reusable and sustainable packaging. In Austria, food retailer Spar is encouraging customers to bring their own containers for delicatessen purchases including meat and cheese.

Mixing it up ▪ Walmart has reshuffled several of its executive positions in an attempt to better incorporate its online and offline operations. Meanwhile, the retail giant in addition with rivals Amazon and Meijer have been named top places to work for people with disabilities.



Buying up ▪ Soft drink giant PepsiCo is making moves to obtain South Africa’s Pioneer Food Group with an offer of USD 1.7 billion on the table. Although the deal has yet to be approved by competition watchdogs, Pioneer Food’s shares jumped nearly 30% on the back of the news.



Defense deal ▪ President Trump has cautioned Amazon that his administration is keeping a keen eye on the company’s bid for a USD 10 billion cloud computing contract with The Pentagon. However, fellow Republicans are imploring the president not to get involved and delay the process.

Artificial intelligence ▪ Chinese e-commerce giants Tencent and Alibaba have created AI-driven apps to assist Chinese citizens coming to grips with tricky new enforced waste management laws. Meanwhile, analysts are weighing in on the accuracy of facial recognition tech, as advanced methods combine gait, partially exposed faces and can even monitor unique heart beat patterns to identify people.



Garbage gaffe ▪ Cosmetics retailer Sephora’s New Zealand debut was clouded by an environmental blunder that is being investigated by local council. A witness photographed confetti, cosmetic residue and test strips being loaded into buckets and tipped down drains, polluting local waterways.

Marketing strategy ▪ Luxury label Louis Vuitton has gone off brand to take advantage of the 1980s hype that popular TV show Stranger Things has created. The French fashion house has launched a free video game using lo-fi graphics synonymous with 80s gaming and directs users through New York streets to collect Louis Vuitton symbols.



Holiday hype ▪ Department store Target is going above and beyond to cater to children with special needs this Halloween, with the launch of four costumes targeting youngsters in wheelchairs and those with sensory needs. Check out these adaptive designs here – it’ll bring warm fuzzies for sure!



Tasty Holland ▪ Once a hard-to-find item at specialty stores, the Dutch Stroopwafel is making it big in the US. The crispy wafer and caramel treat which dates back to the 1700s– has been launched into the mainstream after it was picked up by United Airlines as a snack for passengers, as well as by McDonalds who launched a Stroopwafel McFlurry.
